If #1 was the most confidently executed record in our top 20, Nick Alan’s homemade masterpiece (he literally mixed it in his bedroom on a not-quite-professional computer system) is possibly the most touching.
Nick Alan is only 24, and yet he approaches this material—it’s just about life and love, really, nothing political, didactic, or out of the ordinary—with the insight, honesty and wisdom of an old soul. When he sings “There’s an ocean outside of my window, and a taxicab out on the street. And if you should choose, I’d send it for you. Taxicab, bring her to me.” You not only remember what it was like to be 24, lonely, and longing for a girl you’ve been afraid to call and ask for a date…you are transported, so that you are literally there again. Over and over, Nick Alan takes you right up to the times in your life when you were at your most vulnerable, your tenderest, your most emotionally intense. He takes you there, draws back a curtain and says, “look, there you are. You saw these things, you felt these things.”

But enough about “honesty.” Honest is a word that’s lost its meaning in the music business for its relentless application as a label for nearly every record that comes out. It almost sounds like a consolation prize for an album that doesn’t have the greatest songs, but Nicholas Alan is, from the standpoint of pure melody and lyric, a legit candidate for the best undiscovered songwriter alive. His songs grow and grow on you until you are compelled to listen.

That’s a testament to Alan’s command of melody at a sophisticated level, and probably his upbringing as the son of an accomplished jazz bassist. His melodies wind, unfold slowly, turn back on themselves, and come to rest at unexpected but entirely sensible ends. You like them at first—but then, at first, you don’t fully understand where he’s going. You have to live with this album for a while, and then you realize every song is beautiful. And his lyrics are as imaginatively imagistic as any artist we’ve found.

His father’s jazz band plays on the album and it was entirely recorded unexpertly by the musicians who played on it. Some of the mix choices—awful reverbs, strange panning choices—are joyfully inexplicable! This meant we were not able to give it high marks for sonic quality, but on the other hand, its sound is positively endearing. And don’t get us wrong: it doesn’t sound entirely amateurish, just a cut below the big-budget-sounding stuff that mostly surrounds it on this chart. These days it seems every unsigned artist has a big-time-sounding demo. Nick Alan doesn’t. His is just better than theirs in almost every other way.

Chris McKay heads down new road musically, takes step away from photo work

By Chris J. But after years of carving out a canon of feisty compositions, McKay is veering in a slightly different direction these days.

McKay, who will appear with the Critical Darlings Thursday at Tasty World, recently "co-wrote" a pair of songs with none other than The Who's Pete Townshend and is in the process of putting the final touches on a new tune that will be highlighted by the contributions of one of the rock world's most valuable sidemen.

"It's actually all a bit overwhelming," says McKay.

Although he's never met the legendary British icon, McKay received word earlier this year that Townshend - along with programmer Dave Snowdon and composer/mathematician Lawrence Ball - had taken digital data supplied by McKay (including sound bites and photographs) as part of their "Lifehouse Lottery" to create two synthesizer-driven pieces of music that are somewhat reminiscent of the opening movements of Who classics such as "Baba O'Riley," "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Eminence Front."

"The whole thing with Pete Townshend was a fluke," says McKay, who took Townshend's photo late last year when The Who visited Atlanta. "It may not wind up on the next album, but I'm sure I'll wind up doing something with it."

The South Carolina native, who moved to Athens seven years ago, has definite plans about another song he's written entitled "Something Unseen."

"My original band was a power-pop trio, and I tend to write layered, harmonic songs with lots of counter melodies," he says. "My goal is to write more advanced songs than regular pop music, which is where 'Something Unseen' enters the picture. 'Something Unseen' is a departure from what we usually do in that it's an epic-type, piano-based tune that will be the closing song on the next album."

Although McKay has exceptionally capable co-conspirators in guitarist Joe Orr, drummer Josh Couillard and bassist Frank Defreese, none of them are a piano player, which clearly provides the heart of the song.

"I began thinking of who, in my wildest dreams, I'd want to play the piano," says McKay, "and I came up with two names - (the late Queen vocalist) Freddie Mercury and Mike Garson, who played on so many of David Bowie's great albums. Obviously, Freddie Mercury was unavailable, so I decided to try and find Mike Garson."

Garson, who has also added his piano prowess to recordings by Nine Inch Nails, No Doubt and Smashing Pumpkins, was contacted by McKay through his MySpace page and indicated a willingness to sign on for the project. Then McKay sought out Athens producer-musician Dave Barbe, who has manned the board for a host of notable acts, including R.E.M., Drive-By Truckers and Son Volt, to gauge his interest in working on "Something Unseen" and the next Critical Darlings' album.

"I've wanted to work with Dave for a long time because I love what he does, and I'm arrogant enough to think I can add to what he's done," says McKay. "When I met him, we started talking about music and it was like visiting with a family member. So now I'm totally blown away."

"In early June, I'll be working with Dave on the basic track and then we'll send it to Mike, who'll add his piano parts," McKay said earlier this year. "It's kind of interesting that the last song will set the mood for the album. We're going to play some shows first and then start on the album in a few months."

McKay's latest exploits come on the heels of the release of the Critical Darlings' debut album, "C'mon Feel Your Joy," which was recorded in 2005 but wasn't issued for national distribution until early May.

"Things are working on a fast track," he says. "We played our first show with Josh in April and within a few weeks we signed an indie deal to distribute the album, which we recorded two years ago. We held off on releasing it because we were waiting to find the right drummer. Now's the time to maximize our efforts."

With his music prominently on the front burner these days, McKay is taking a respite from the world of photographing rock concerts and rock stars.

"I've made a conscious decision to back away from photography," says McKay, who began his career as a lensman shooting for Flagpole and for the last several years has licensed his work through New York-based Wire Image (which is owned by media titan Getty). "I'm focused on the band now. I'm willing to take this chance because I believe in the people I'm working with and they believe in the project."

The Rockdale Citizen - Wednesday, September 20

"Singer-songwriter Jessica Urick has been known to do some rowdy rockin' when she and her band Four Story hit the stage, but make no mistake about it - this 20-year old chanteause is country to the core...With her cheerful countenance, her determined work ethic and her made-for-country voice, it's likely audiences will take notice of Jessica Urick for years to come..."

Smiths Olde Bar, July 24th, 2006

Jessica Urick, a rising star in the local country music scene, has accomplished quite a bit since the start of her professional career in 2005.She impressed the judges of the Colgate Country Showdown (so much so that she won the state title), has performed at fundraisers such as Relay For Life, and contributed vocals for bands such as Grayson Manor. She shows no signs of slowing down, either her first full-length album is being released this fall, and more shows are being planned every day. Along with her band Four Story, Urick has crafted a sound that, while edgy, is still accessible and her fanbase grows with every performance.

On July 24th Jessica and Four Story performed at Smiths Olde Bar, and from the moment the curtain opened, it was evident she felt right at home on stage. Performing songs from her EP, True Lady as well as material from her upcoming album she won the crowd over with a balance of impressive musicianship and sassy vocals. Four Story themselves had a clean, balanced sound. It was evident that they not just Uricks backing band; they were an integral part of the show. The solos and backing vocals complimented her performance well, never feeling out of place or overwhelming.

Songs such as Cruel Girl and You Wanna Talk About Love proved that Urick is an invigorating new talent in country music. Many of her songs demonstrated that she wasnt only influenced by the country music genre, though; there were hints of rock and even funk sprinkled throughout her performance (in one song, she even affectionately referred to it as funktry). Urick has found a way to fuse the sounds of artists as varied as Aerosmith, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton into something unique and fresh.

While the music was outstanding, the most endearing part of the show was Urick herself. There was a sense of excitement stemming from her which seemed to infect the crowd, bringing about smiles and applause. For her, it was just as much an honor to play for the crowd as it was for them to see her perform. In a day and age where so many performers take playing for an audience for granted, Urick brings a youthful sense of spirit to the stage.

If her performance at Smiths Olde Bar is any indication, Jessica Urick and Four Story have a bright future ahead of them. Its easy to see why people come to see her perform. Be sure to catch her next time she is in your area youll be glad you did.

~ Andrew J.
